Comprehensive Care
Hand Therapy
Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb – from the shoulder to the hand. Hand therapy assists a person to regain maximum use of his or her upper limb after injury, surgery, or the onset of disease.
Treatment is provided by a hand therapist, who is first trained as an Occupational Therapist or a Physiotherapist, with a special interest and experience in the rehabilitation of the hand and upper limb conditions. Some therapists may also have post-graduate training. Hand therapy involves the making of custom moulded splints, specialised exercise, and activities to help the hand heal and enable the hand to be used again in everyday life and work.
Medico-Legal Assessments
Medico-legal work is a generic term used by occupational therapists in South Africa to describe a field of practice where the occupational therapist works with the legal fraternity to help them quantify or qualify a legal matter.
At present, therapists are referred injured clients from private or state attorneys who request an assessment of the functional abilities/restrictions of these clients, a written report on the assessment for legal use and to be available for consultation and/or to testify as an expert witness. These may include, for example, personal injury matters (such as Road Accident Fund Claims, Medical Malpractice or Civil Claims).
Neurological Rehabilitation
The goal of rehabilitation work when dealing with nervous system diseases is likewise to restore the function of the nervous system as much as possible, to optimise everyday activities, and to achieve social participation to the highest degree possible.
There are many different treatment approaches used, which will be selected for your unique case and needs.
Geriatric Care
OT is an approach that involves the use of purposeful activity or intervention designed to achieve functional outcomes which promote health, prevent injury or disability and which develop, improve, sustain or restore the highest possible level of independence
Geriatric group therapy is an excellent way for older people to feel a sense of support and camaraderie with others dealing with similar issues. Group therapy may also help to reduce social isolation.
